Best Winter Skin Care Routine For Dry, Stretchy Or Flaky Skin
Winter is coming and we got to change our skincare routine as with the changing seasons our skin tends to change too. During winter, my facial skin which is oily turns combination and my body skin which is normal turns dry. So the products which I have been using from the summer season do not work out well for me in winter. Many people have dry skin and during winter their dry skin starts flaking. My skin flakes too in winter from retinol usage and also due to the cold weather! So in this post, I will be sharing the best winter skin care routine which I follow every winter and skincare tips which you need to know. Further, I will be sharing two DIY remedies to treat dry or flaky skin in winter. Without further ado let’s quickly have a look at the must follow winter skin care routine.
Makeup removers filled with chemicals may irritate the dry and stretchy skin so use natural makeup removers like olive oil or coconut oil. They will not only remove the makeup completely but will also leave your skin feeling moisturized and nourished. And the sensitive skin will not be left feeling irritated.
When it comes to face washes, use one which is non-foaming and at the same time cleanses the skin well. Since foaming face wash will remove all the oil from the skin leaving your skin feeling drier and stretchy in the colder months. I would suggest you the Aroma Essentials neem face wash if your skin type is oily-combination-acne. If your skin type is normal-dry, then Lass Naturals rose and cardamom face wash is good and also does the job of cleansing and toning.
This is the time when you need to schedule exfoliating sessions both for your facial skin and body skin. I am used to exfoliating my body with this DIY rope loofah on a daily basis. I have been doing this since my childhood! This DIY rope loofah is made by my dadi (grandma). I even scrub my feet, the sole and heel area and it does its job well in full body exfoliation! You can use your regular loofah or body scrub. For my facial skin these days I’m loving Aroma Essentials almond exfo. It is a gel-based scrub and suits my oily turning combination skin very well. But if you have dry skin then I suggest using a creamier scrub during colder months. Himalaya Herbals apricot scrub is a good creamy scrub!
No hot showers!
The reason why everyone suggests not to have hot showers during colder months is that it can leave your skin dry, dehydrated and wrinkled. Yes, I agree that it feels very calming taking long hot showers during the colder months but that is not good to maintain a healthy skin. So instead go for luke warm water and complete your bath quick. And as your skin is still damp, use a good moisturizing body lotion. For winter months I love using Vaseline intensive care body lotion. It is perfect for my dry and stretchy body skin. You can use your choice of body lotion or body oil. Just be sure that it is moisturizing enough.
Once you are done moisturizing your body skin use a good hydrating moisturizer for your facial skin. I normally use aloe vera gel products as my moisturizer since it suits best on my oily skin. For dry skin, I’ll suggest using a cream based moisturizer which has a non-greasy formula.
Take care of your hands and feet
Your hands and feet may need an extra TLC during the winter season! So make sure that you involve them too in the moisturizing routine! For my hands and nails I love using Fuschia hand & nail cream and for my feet, I like Last Forest coconut balm, which also prevents cracked heels. Along with this, I’ll also suggest getting regular pedicures and manicures.
What about toner?
Use an alcohol-free toner preferably rose water. Many swear by the Kama Ayurveda rose water but if that’s too expensive for you, then you can try the Zofla rose water. That’s also 100% natural and organic.
Steaming feels so good!
Skin feels dry, stretchy and flaky during Winter thus there will be an accumulation of dead skin cells too! With regular exfoliation, you also need to take a facial steam every 10 days. This will open up the pores ensuring that the skin is getting deeply cleaned. If you face breakouts during winter, steaming will reduce the chances. After that, do not forget to rinse with cold water to close the pores.
Don’t miss sunscreen!
Many tend to ignore using a sunblock during this season. Remember, the sun rays are still passing through no matter how clouded it is. You need to use a sunblock no matter which season it is. I have been using Aroma Essentials carrot sunblock these days, it also moisturizes the facial skin. It sounds perfect for winter usage!
May I need to remind on water intake?
I know you may have excuses like if you have more water then you’ll be going to the restroom now and then. But we are talking about skincare here. And to achieve that inside out glowing skin during winter you need to consume an adequate amount of water! Especially if you are someone whose skin turns to look dull during winter!
DIY face packs
As promised, in the beginning, here are two effective, easy to make DIY remedies to treat our winter skin. The items used are already available in your kitchen you wouldn’t need to buy anything extra. The only complaint from you would be the smell! I suggest you create a fresh batch every time. Now let’s check out and prepare!
For instant hydration
Curd & honey mask
If your skin looks dull, dehydrated and dry then this mask is just for you! You only need 1 spoon of curd mixing it with 1 spoon of honey. Honey is good for hydrating skin and it is also anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Curd helps in cleaning the skin and kicks away the dull and tired look!
Mix it well and apply using either your fingertips or a face pack brush. Do not forget your neck! If need be you can smoother the mask on your arms as well. This mask can be used 2-3 times on facial and neck skin. So you can store the leftover mask in the fridge.
To treat flaky and itchy skin
Banana & honey mask
If you have extremely dry, stretchy and flaky skin then this mask is just for you! Since I experience flaky skin so I use this mask and within one usage I see a great difference in the flakiness. Yes of course to maintain the result you have to use it regularly. So for this mask, you need a small piece of banana (The rest I ate!) and mix it with 1 spoon of honey.
You will need to mash the banana using the back of a spoon. Add honey to it and mix it well. I use my middle and ring finger to smoother this mask on my face and neck. Banana is also good if the skin is acne prone which is mine. This honey & banana mixture will remove all the flaky skin!
This is the best time to use sheet mask!
I would suggest the sheet masks from Mond’Sub. Their anti-wrinkle & moisturizing mask is the best to be used during Winter! Also, it’s quite affordable! There are many other hydrating sheet masks available from well-known brands. In the end, it’s your decision when making a purchase!
Don’t ignore your lips!
