How to deep clean makeup brushes & sponges
Hellow, beautiful people! I hope you are doing well! 🙂
I do makeup on a daily basis. Not a full dramatic one but something which makes me look more presentable and not homeless! As much as I love applying makeup I also have to make sure that I clean my makeup application tools regularly. It is essential to clean makeup brushes regularly. It prevents breakouts from unclean makeup brushes due to the product and facial oil build-up. As you can tell from the title, today I’ll be showing you how I deep clean makeup brushes and beauty sponge in pictures! It’s all easy-peasy and very less time-consuming! Along with cleaning & drying, we’ll also put some light on how often we should clean makeup brushes. So let’s get started, shall we!?
How to deep clean makeup brushes & sponges
So I have been using a brush egg to clean all my makeup brushes. It’s made up of hard silicone and cleans all the brushes effortlessly! I spotted this one on Amazon at a very cheap price- INR 165 You can get it From Here. (Hurry up, as long as it is in Free Delivery!) I will recommend you to get it because it cleans all the brushes very well and for the fact that it’s very easy on the pocket!
DIY makeup brush cleaner
Now you don’t need to buy a separate makeup brush cleaner because you can make one yourself at home! And it’s quite easy! All you would need is your regular shampoo or you can even use a baby wash or baby shampoo. Create a solution by mixing the shampoo with some water. I have used Ultra Blends Revitalizing shampoo.
How to clean foundation brush
First I like to wash all the big brushes like my foundation brush and powder brush. All I have to do is dip the brush the cleansing solution and then swirl it around on the brush cleaner. (Note: The brush egg is to be worn on the fingers, meaning you have to insert your fingers into space. And then swirl the brush to clean.) As I swirl, I can already see all the makeup product coming off right on to the brush egg.
Once I’m satisfied I dip the brush into a bowl filled with water. This step allows me to check if all the product has been removed from the brush completely or not. After this (We are in my sink!) I hold the brush under a low-pressure running faucet. You have to hold the brush in such a way that the bristles part is slanted downwards. Once I’m done, I press the bristles gently to remove the excess water. And after that, I follow an additional step by covering the bristles with a tissue paper and pressing gently to get rid of the water so that it dries faster!
How to clean eyeshadow brushes
I follow the same steps to clean all my eye makeup brushes. The only difference is that I use the top part of the brush egg to swirl the brushes. That is the region where you can see the dots. Rest all the steps are the same:- dipping in the solution, swirling, dipping in clean water, running under tap water and removing the excess water.
How to clean eyebrow brush
To clean my eyebrow brush I create a lather with my regular face wash. I follow the same to clean a spoolie too. But if it’s an angular brush then I’ll suggest you clean it on the egg brush. And then I hold it under running water, that’s it, it’s done!
How to clean makeup sponges/beauty blender
I use my regular face wash to clean the beauty sponges. I make sure that the face wash lathers very well to clean all the product effectively. Here I’m using the Clean & Clear pimple clearing face wash. First I wet the sponge and then pour the face wash on it directly, it should be anywhere from a coin-sized or more. You hands are enough to clean it!
Once you are done don’t forget to squeeze out the water. After which I also like to squeeze some more water using a clean wash rag.
How to dry makeup brushes
I like to clean all the makeup brushes and sponges at night. So that throughout the night it gets enough time to dry up and the next day I can use them again! How I like to dry them is, I use a box and in it, I place some layers of tissue papers and then I place the brushes in such a manner that they are slanted. This way the gravity takes away all the moisture from the brushes. So in case if any water has gone inside the ferrule, I don’t have to worry about it losing the bristles or fall outs! And don’t worry it is not going to change the shape of the bristles because they aren’t placed vertically. If you see in the picture below you will understand better.
The other way to dry your brushes is to use brush guards. I don’t have any so I use the above method. So I’ll just tell you how to dry your brushes with brush guards. You put the brush guard on the brush. Make sure to leave some space so when you keep the brush vertically it stands on the brush guard and not on the bristles. And then place all the brushes with their respective brush guards vertically in a glass.
How often to wash makeup brushes
How often to clean your makeup brushes and sponges depends on your usage and the product’s texture. Let’s discuss which brushes needs to be cleaned how often and why.
Sponges/Beauty blender You need to clean your beauty sponges after every usage. So when you use it for the next time, the sponge should be clean before it touches your skin! And this is because mostly we use liquid or cream products with our beauty blender. And all these products have to be cleaned otherwise you will face breakouts!
Eye makeup brushes Since we are mostly playing with powder products here so it is okay to clean them after few uses. Also, many of us do not use eye makeup brushes on a daily basis. And when you use dark eyeshadows, you will need to clean the brush. So that next time the brush could be of use to play with lighter eyeshadows!
Foundation & Concealer brush Like beauty sponges, you need to make sure that your foundation & concealer brush is clean prior to every usage. As I use my foundation brush on a daily basis, I make sure to clean it every night. With the brush egg that I have, it gets washed very quickly!
Other face brushes Just like all the eye makeup brushes, other brushes can be cleaned after a few uses, These brushes include- powder brush, blush brush, contour brush and high lighter brush!
And that’s how I deep clean makeup brushes & beauty sponges! Previously, I used to swirl the brushes on my palm. Now that I have this brush egg, it cleanses the brushes faster and also saves my time! By the way, I would also like to know what you use and how you clean your makeup brushes & sponges! Let me know in the comment section! 🙂
